Cold Fish: Trailer

If you’re a fan of Japanese cinema you’ve likely heard of Shion Sono. If you haven’t then you need to get on your Netflix right now. I recommend Suicide Club, Noriko’s Dinner Table, Hazard, Strange Circus, and Love Exposure if you can find it anywhere. If you can’t ask me nicely and I’ll let you borrow my copy. Below is the trailer for Sono’s latest work “Cold Fish”.

The official synopsis:

Shamoto runs a small tropical fish shop and leads a boring, but stable life. His second wife, Taeko, does not get along with his daughter, Mitsuko, and this worries him. He also feels somehow unfulfilled and dissatisfied with what his life has become.

One day Mitsuko is caught shoplifting at a department store. There they meet a friendly man named Murata, who helps to settle things between Mitsuko and the store manager. Since Murata also runs a tropical fish shop, Shamoto establishes a bond with him and they become friends; Mitsuko even begins working for Murata and living at his house, to avoid conflicts with her stepmother.

What Shamoto doesn’t know, however, is that Murata hides many dark secrets behind his friendly face. He sells cheap fish to his customers for high prices with his artful lies. If anyone detects his fraud or refuses to go along with his money-making schemes, they’re murdered and their bodies disposed of by Murata and his wife in grisly ways. Shamoto is slowly taken in by Murata’s tactics, and by the time he realizes that Murata is insane, and a serial killer who has made over fifty people disappear, he is powerless to do anything about it. But now Mitsuko is a hostage at Murata’s home, and Shamoto himself has become the killer’s unwilling accomplice!

Meanwhile, the murders, without any trace of the bodies, continue unabated. The police have long suspected Murata and try to get information about him from Shamoto; Murata quickly senses the danger and threatens Shamoto not to report anything to the police.

In the end, the conflict between Shamoto and Murata will result in murder, insanity, and an ordinary man being driven to the edge of the abyss.

If you’re lucky enough to have a region free DVD player you can find this available on Amazon in R2 DVD. If not you’ll have to hold out for an American release TBA.

Midair Monster Mayhem – Altitude: Trailer

It’s a giant flying squid in a thunderstorm attacking a plane. If that alone doesn’t make you want to watch it you have issues. “Altitude” is comic book artist Kaare Andrews’ first full length feature and even though it debuted to some pretty lukewarm reviews at VIFF I’ll still give it a whirl. The premise is ridiculous, the trailer is more ridiculous, and it’s available on Blu-Ray on Oct. 26. Check it out below.

Plug and Pray: Trailer

“Plug and Pray” is a documentary about the current state and future of artificial intelligence. It’s currently playing at the Vancouver International Film Festival with no scheduled North American distribution. I’ll watch anything with robots.
Enough said.

* If you haven’t read Ray Kurzweil’s “Are We Spiritual Machines” you should.

Coen Bros. True Grit: Trailer

I can’t think of one movie that I’ve been more excited for in 2010. The Coen Bros. “True Grit” has classic written all over it. Check out the trailer below and you’ll likely agree. The film will be released Dec. 25th. Enjoy!

Norwegian Ninja?!

That’s right, a Norwegian Ninja flick! What makes it even more awesome is that it’s based on actual events! Norwegian Ninja is the true story of Arne Treholt, a high ranking Norwegian diplomat who, at the height of the Cold War, was tried and convicted of spying for the Soviet Union. He was later pardoned, but the circumstances of his conviction remained suspicious.

After watching the trailer below it’s obvious they took more than a few liberties with the material, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look entertaining as hell. Even more interesting is that upon release of the film and nearly 25 years after Arne Treholt’s conviction, secret service agents involved in the investigation have come forward and confirmed that they fabricated and planted key evidence that was used to convict him. The film is currently making the festival rounds here in North America, but no release date has been set. Hopefully someone awesome like IFC will pick it up and give it a proper distribution.

Thanks to Twitch for this nugget.

Teaser For The Second Drunk Vlog: Turkey Shoot

The three no talent ass clowns are back for their second drunk night at the movies. This time we take on the 1982 ozsploitation Turkey Shoot. As you can see from the teaser it turns into well…a whole lot of tomfoolery. Check back Wednesday July 15th for the full video. And yes I did steal the idea for the trailer for the Bruno trailer, which they stole from many films before it. Oh, and everything is funnier with Benny Hill’s theme music.

Outtake # 3 : Sam’s Awful Bleached Hair.

It’s the final outtake from out Drunk vlog. Sam wanders in and gets berated for the duration of the evening. No one was harmed. Except Sam’s feelings.
But after looking at his hair you’ll agree…he deserved it.
