Late to the game here but yeah, Papillion is not obscure. I shamefully haven’t even seen many of Steve McQueen’s bigger more popular films and I’ve STILL seen Papillion
Re: Valentine’s Day films – Love Actually?! Ugh. Nighy was the only funny part of that movie, though I sometimes leave it on TV for Andrew Lincoln or Martin Freeman & Jessica Hynes-Stevenson. There were way too many stories I did not give a shit about in that film, and the Emma Thompson/Alan Rickman one just depressed the fuck out of me.
I’m surprised Punch Drunk Love didn’t come up. Personally, I’d throw in High Fidelity. I know it’s like the anti-romance, but it’s the perfect honest relationship movie, and it even ends happily and sweet so it’s not all bitter. Also, for the off-beat/horror lovers – High Tension! And if I have to throw out a totally girly one – Only You (Robert Downey Jr & Maria Tomei).
It’s a crime that you haven’t seen Papillion. I grew up on McQueen flicks thanks to my dad so there aren’t many I haven’t seen.
Punch Drunk Love kinda slipped by me while making that list. It definitely should have been on there. As for High Fidelity, it’s a great film but as you said it’s anti-romance and a bit too honest. If I was going to go that route I’d put Closer on there and maybe a couple of early LaBute films.
You mean it’s a crime that Josh hasn’t seen it? As I said, it’s the only one I HAVE seen.
And Closer is fucking CRUSHING. High Fidelity actually makes me feel better.
As far as I’m concerned Josh commits a lot of crimes against film. This is only the tip of the iceberg.
P.S. Watch the Mars Et Avril trailer. Amazing.
