Midair Monster Mayhem – Altitude: Trailer

It’s a giant flying squid in a thunderstorm attacking a plane. If that alone doesn’t make you want to watch it you have issues. “Altitude” is comic book artist Kaare Andrews’ first full length feature and even though it debuted to some pretty lukewarm reviews at VIFF I’ll still give it a whirl. The premise is ridiculous, the trailer is more ridiculous, and it’s available on Blu-Ray on Oct. 26. Check it out below.

It’s Official! Christopher Nolan Will Return for the Next Batman Film!

Hooray! It’s official! Christopher Nolan will direct the next Batman film! Here’s what the man himself had to say:

“It’s becoming inevitable, I’ll put it that way,” Nolan told Empire Online of “Batman 3.” “I feel myself falling into it, I guess. And getting it all figured out and I’m pretty excited about what we’re doing so… If I haven’t announced it, I think that people probably all know at this point that I’m doing it.”

No word yet on where this story will take the character or who the villain will be. I’m glad Nolan decided to return to the franchise as more than just a producer. Do you think he can top “The Dark Knight”?

Plug and Pray: Trailer

“Plug and Pray” is a documentary about the current state and future of artificial intelligence. It’s currently playing at the Vancouver International Film Festival with no scheduled North American distribution. I’ll watch anything with robots.
Enough said.

Monsters: Review

“Monsters” is set 6 years after earth has suffered an alien invasion when a cynical journalist Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy) agrees to take a shaken American tourist Samantha Wynden (Whitney Able) through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the U.S. border.

At its core “Monsters” is about the relationship between Kaulder and Wynden. Kaulder is a photo journalist looking for his big break, and Wynded is the boss’ daughter who just wants to get back home to her fiance. Their travel through the infected zone brings them closer together and forces them to deal with their feelings for each other. Edwards creates and incredibly believable and organic world on a modest budget and the actors are quite good but the film’s schizophrenic script weighs it down. The themes of displaced people of war and immigration problems aren’t ever fully realized and the viewers are left to wonder if Edwards’ himself has answers to the questions he poses.

Overall the film’s atmosphere and performances lift it slightly above the messy script. There is a lot of talent involved here and I think Edwards will eventually make an amazing film. Unfortunately, “Monsters” is not that film. It’s a good effort, with some outstanding visuals and a lazy script. It’s currently available through Comcast on Demand as well as Amazon’s On Demand service. I’d recommend watching this one for the visuals, but wait for the Blu-Ray to be available from Netflix in late December.

Score 5.5/10

Coen Bros. True Grit: Trailer

Johnny Depp as The Lone Ranger?

I’ll probably lose any geek cred that I have by admitting this, but I really don’t like Johnny Depp. I know somewhere deep down there is a good actor hiding, but he’s been so busy hamming it up with Tim Burton and Gore Verbinski for the last 15 years it rarely has the chance to get out. So the news that Depp will be reuniting with his “Pirates” shipmate Verbinski for “The Lone Ranger” is really no surprise. The only thing it really means is that “The Lone Ranger” is doomed. Any desire I had to see this went out the window when these two signed on. I’d rather watch Uwe Boll’s Holocaust flick than ever give this a chance. What say you?

Norwegian Ninja?!

That’s right, a Norwegian Ninja flick! What makes it even more awesome is that it’s based on actual events! Norwegian Ninja is the true story of Arne Treholt, a high ranking Norwegian diplomat who, at the height of the Cold War, was tried and convicted of spying for the Soviet Union. He was later pardoned, but the circumstances of his conviction remained suspicious.

After watching the trailer below it’s obvious they took more than a few liberties with the material, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look entertaining as hell. Even more interesting is that upon release of the film and nearly 25 years after Arne Treholt’s conviction, secret service agents involved in the investigation have come forward and confirmed that they fabricated and planted key evidence that was used to convict him. The film is currently making the festival rounds here in North America, but no release date has been set. Hopefully someone awesome like IFC will pick it up and give it a proper distribution.

Thanks to Twitch for this nugget.
