Three Steven Sodebergh Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen

under
1. The Underneath (1995)
In 1995 Sodebergh released a taut little thriller starring Peter Gallagher, Allison Elliot, and the very underrated William Fitchner. The Underneath is the story of Michael Chambers, a compulsive gambler who returns to his Texas home for the wedding of his mother (Anjanette Comer). In his absence, his ex-wife Rachel (Alison Elliott) has married Tommy (William Fichtner), a ruthless local hood. Michael and Rachel soon resume their relationship, incurring Tommy’s wrath. Out of their deceptions grows a plot to heist an armored car, a crime which requires the unwitting aid of Michael’s stepfather (Paul Dooley) as well as a banker (Elisabeth Shue) with whom Michael shared a brief fling. The film did fairly well on video, but was completely overlooked upon it’s theatrical release. The film has stylish cinematography, tight pacing, and some great perfomances. Especially by Fitchner who chews up every scene he’s in. If you haven’t seen this, put it on your damn Netflix Queue now!

2. Schizopolis (1996)
Absurdist comedy at it’s finest. Sodebergh’s Schizopolis is nonsensical, offensive, and completely hilarious. Here’s the plot breakdown via IMDB

Fletcher Munson is a lethargic, passive worker for a Scientology-like self-help corporation called Eventualism. After the death of a colleague, he is promoted to the job of writing speeches for T. Azimuth Schwitters, the founder and head of the group. He uses this as an excuse to be emotionally and romantically distant from his wife, who, he discovers, is having an affair with his doppelganger, a dentist named Dr. Jeffrey Korchek. As Munson fumbles with the speech and Korchek becomes obsessed with a new patient, a psychotic exterminator named Elmo Oxygen goes around the town seducing lonely wives and taking photographs of his genitals.

It’s just as crazy as it sounds and even more fun than you think. I suggest you watch this and pair it with your favorite adult beverage. Perhaps Unibroue’s #17?

3. The Limey
In The Limey Stamp plays an ex-con who travels to L.A. looking for the man responsible for the death of his daughter. This is a revenge film, but not an action film. It focuses on the character’s relationship with his daughter and how he is forced to deal with his shortcomings as father. The performances really standout in this film. With a supporting cast that includes Peter Fonda, Lesley Ann Warren, Luis Guzman, and Nikki Katt it’s absolutely a must see film. And remember while this film doesn’t fall into the Action genre, Terence Stamp will still fuck you up. Kneel before Zod!

A Glowing (sort of) review of Watchmen

watchmen002
No, I didn’t get to see Watchmen. But the geeks at FilmSchoolRejects sure did. You may have noticed that I haven’t posted much on what is probably the most anticipated movie of the year for many of you, and that’s not because I’m not interested. It’s simply because I’m completely sick of all the bullshit rumors. Now that someone I trust (FilmSchoolRejects) has seen it I can again look forward to the most gratuitously hyped film of the decade being released. It seems this is the best Watchmen any of us could have hoped for. Check out their review HERE.

Magnet/Magnolia Gets U.S. Distribution Rights for Bronson

bronson
A while back I posted the trailer for Nicholas Winding Refn’s amazing looking Bronson. The film has since had it’s U.S. premiere at Sundance and as of today, according to indiWIRE, has been picked up for U.S. distribution by Magnet/Magnolia films. This makes the second time Refn has paired with Magnolia. In 2006 Magnolia released his Pusher trilogy. I only hope that they give Bronson at least a small theatrical run. This one looks like it deserves to be seen on the big screen. Watch the trailer below, if you haven’t seen it already. If you have, watch it again.
* I smell award recognition for Tom Hardy

First Teaser Trailer for Van Diemen’s Land

Van Diemen’s Land is Jonathan Auf Der Heide’s feature film debut and after watching this teaser I think he’ll be around for a while. The film has no US release as of yet, but makes it’s debut at the film Adeliade Film Festival. Below are the Synopsis and Trailer for the film thanks to Twitch. They kick ass.

1822. Van Diemen’s Land was a dreaded penal settlement, a point of no return at the end of the earth. Its entrance was Macquarie Harbour, also known as “Hell’s Gates.” A work party of eight convicts escape into the beautiful and brutal wilderness. This band of Irish, English and Scottish thieves are intent on freedom but totally unprepared for the hardships awaiting them in this dark and primeval place. Their flight thrusts them into a battle with harshest enemies known to man: the lush yet unforgiving land, and the darkness within their own hearts. As their food runs out and tensions escalate, they find themselves contemplating the unthinkable. God wields an axe and there can be only one survivor. This visually stunning debut by Jonathan auf der Heide is based on the true story of Alexander Pearce, Australia’s most notorious convict, whose story continues to haunt the conscience of Australian history.

2nd Lesbian Vampire Killers Trailer Kicks Ass!

lesbianvampirekillers
I should have probably been sold on the name alone, but the teaser for Lesbian Vampire Killers didn’t do much for me. Below is the second, and much more kickass trailer for the film. LVK will be released in the UK March 20th. For those of you lucky enough to live near Austin the film will have it’s US premiere at SXSW film festival that runs March 13-21. It has no US distribution at this time, but I’ll keep you posted. Enjoy the gooey NSFW goodness below.

*For more info on the SXSW screenings go HERE.
** Director Phil Claydon also has the really interesting Joshua Breed in production. It’s about a game show with zombies. I’m in! :)

Funny People Trailer

I can’t decide if Judd Apatow’s Funny People is going to be great or if it’s going to wallow in mediocrity. The trailer has some promising bits, it’s got a great cast, and it is Apatow, however it just looks like everything else he’s done to date. Of course I’m gonna shell out the ten dollars to go see it. It’s Apatow directing Adam Sandler! Sandler desperately needs a good film to save his career from the last 7 years of mistakes. I hope for his sake this is it. Check out the trailer below and judge for yourself.
* What was the last Adam Sandler film you truly enjoyed?

Outtake # 3 : Sam’s Awful Bleached Hair.

It’s the final outtake from out Drunk vlog. Sam wanders in and gets berated for the duration of the evening. No one was harmed. Except Sam’s feelings.
But after looking at his hair you’ll agree…he deserved it.

Drunk Dudes Playing Swords: Drunk Vlog Outtake

Just another short outtake from our “Against the Drunk” Vlog. In this one we attempt to cut full 2 liter bottles of soda in half with a broad sword. Note to self, hide all weapons in the apartment before we shoot Drunk Vlog #2.

* The song at the end is Boris’ Damaged 3 of their Split EP Damaged. Love it.

The Expendables Gets More Awesomeful!

expendables
It seems with every passing day Stallone is adding more awesomeness to the cast of The Expendables. If you’re keeping track, here’s the cast so far Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, Forest Whitaker, and Eric Roberts. Well you can now add two more to that list, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Trejo. This movie is one Jean Claude Van Damme away from being an Action film fanboy’s wet dream! That’s right Stallone, get on it. There is no reason that Van Damme shouldn’t be invited to this party. Is anyone else as geeked up about this movie as I am right now?!
